The Symposium of the Conference
Ecological Interactions Useful for Marine Ecosystem Based Management: The Roles of Positive Species Interactions, Ecosystem Engineers and Species Diversity
Ecosystem based fisheries management makes sense when variability and productivity is not explained by simply summing the individual species being fished. Ecosystem-based management is likely to be more effective than single species management when marine ecosystems are characterized by:
- Positive species interactions (facilitation) within marine ecosystems
- Habitat engineers which structure and modulate the flow of resources within ecosystems
- Emergent properties such as stability or enhanced rates of productivity
These topics are not new to ecology, but need to be evaluated in the context of marine ecosystems to determine how they might be applied to fisheries management. Preliminary attempts to model multispecies fisheries traditionally incorporate only negative species interactions such as predation and competition. These models will, by definition, have lower yields than models summing individual species in the absence of negative interactions.
In this symposium, we will examine what lessons have been learned from marine ecology and apply these to marine ecosystem based management. We will explore the potential consequences of fishing for positive species interactions, reductions in species that serve as ecosystem engineers and reductions in species diversity.
Convened by: Dr. Laura Rogers-Bennett, Cal Dept. Fish and Game and U.C. Bodega Marine Laboratory.
Financial Assistance
Limited financial assistance will be available to graduate students. Requests for financial aid will be considered in the order they are received. Requests must be made no later than 15 September, 2006 to the attention of the CalCOFI Registrar (Maura Leos at mleos@dfg.ca.gov).
Call For Papers
- Verbal Transactions - A limited number of 15 minute contributed verbal transactions (16-20) will be accepted, related to the symposium topic or the biology, physics, chemistry, geology, meteorology, politics or economics of the California Current ecosystem, its adjacent waters, and Eastern Boundary Currents.
Abstracts of papers for verbal transactions must be received by the CalCOFI Representative by 15 September, 2006 at rogersbennett@ucdavis.edu. These abstracts will be reviewed by a selection committee and authors will be notified of the acceptance of their submission by 29 September, 2006. (Abstract guidelines)
Please be aware ALL registration forms including those for symposium speakers should go to the CalCOFI Registrar either electronically or by hard-copy. - Poster Transactions - It is not anticipated poster transactions will be limited in number. In order for poster titles to be included in the second announcement, they should be received by the CalCOFI Representative by 15 September, 2006. (Abstract guidelines)
