UCLA, Santa Monica Pier SASS was cleaned and zinc were replaced
Conducted by mlc/mh

Cleaning of UCLA SASS on September 23, 2009 at 1025 PDT.
Dive one: 91 min from 1025-1156 PDT, max depth 26ft.

- Calibration bottles for salinity (2) were taken at 1029 PDT before the package was cleaned.

- Typical growth on package and CTD unit though fluorometer cap was filled with sediment. Most of growth was mussels. Sediment was also in tubing connection between pump and fluorometer since the tubing may be a bit too long and has a slight bend. Sediment was collecting in the low point of the tube. Left tubing as is since I didn't bring spares. Cleaned entire package, including fluoro cap, tubing between pump and fluoro, and flushed CTD cell several times.

- Lead bars (2) were completely gone and the copper tape and copper screens over the entire package had a light green color indicating corrosion or stray current- possibly due to the underwater connector?

- Second set of calibration salt samples (2) taken at 1152 PDT.

Dive two: 28 min from 1223-1250 PDT, max depth 26ft.
-Replaced zinc bars (2). May need to add more in the future.
-During second dive red water from red tide was visible at bottom of cage and by end of dive at top of cage.

Took water sample after end of dive, ~1330 PDT at 1m from surface for L. poly bloom and ran chlorophyll- average chl value =23.22 mg/m3.

Problems/Need for next time::
-Lost 1- 9/16 box wrench and 1- 3/4 box wrench
-Tubing between fluorometer and pump may need to be shortened.
-Need to double check fluorometer, current values appear low may be due to pump not working or fluorometer problem.
-Need to double check zincs and possibly add more if completely gone next time. If so, bring bolts for zincs.
-Need more metal paint scrappers for cleaning cage
-Add crescent wrnech to dive tool list- good for any nut!
