Generic Setup Information
This section provides the basic information you will need to set up your email client to access your IOD email account. If you aren't familiar with setting up an email client, or cannot send or receive emails after setting up your client, please read the detailed instructions for your operating system.
To access your IOD email account, you will need to provide your email client with the following information:
- We recommend setting up your account as an IMAP account.
- Your username is the same as your coast username
- The password you use to connect to the mail server is not your coast password. Your email password is set and changed independent of your coast password.
- For your email address, please use your UCSD address (username@ucsd.edu). If you do not have a UCSD address, contact help@coast.ucsd.edu.
- The incoming mail server should be set to 'iodmail.ucsd.edu'.
- If you are connecting from on-campus, the outgoing (SMTP) mail server should be set to 'smtp.ucsd.edu'. If you are connecting from off-campus, see the section on sending email from off-campus.
- If you are going to be checking your email from off campus, you will need to configure your email client to make SSL connections.

Sending Email From Off-campus
If you need to send email from off-campus, you have two options.
The first option is to configure your client to use the campus smtp server. Effective October 23, 2007, the existing smtp authorization mechanism is being deactivated and replaced by a mechanism that allows the campus email system to recognize your email address in a more secure way. This change addresses security and spam concerns, while also eliminating the need for you to periodically renew your authorization. Please visit the following website for documentation to configure your email client:
http://blink.ucsd.edu/go/reconfiguresmtp
The second option is to use your Internet Service Provider's SMTP server. Some ISPs will not allow connections to outside SMTP servers, so you may be required to use this option. UCSD Network Operations maintains a list of SMTP servers for local ISPs. Remember that if you switch to a new ISP you will have to update your email configuration.
Changing Your Password
You can change your IOD email password at https://www.iod.ucsd.edu/password/.
Webmail
Web access to your IOD email is available through SquirrelMail at https://iodmail.ucsd.edu. For more information on the SquirrelMail interface, see the SquirrelMail User Manual.
Sieve Filtering
The IOD email system uses Sieve to provide vacation message, forwarding, and filtering capabilities. To edit your filtering rules, go to the SmartSieve interface at https://www.iod.ucsd.edu/smartsieve and log in using your IOD email name and password. Make sure the Server field is set to 'IOD Cyrus Mail.'
Vacation Messages
A vacation message is automatic reply sent to anyone who emails you, usually activated when you plan to be off of email for an extended period of time. To create, enable, or disable a vacation message, log in to SmartSieve as mentioned above, then click on 'Vacation Settings' in the top menu bar.
- Auto-respond Text: This is the text that will be sent to anyone who emails you while your vacation message is enabled.
- Days: This is the number of days the system will wait before resending your vacation message to a given address.
- Addresses: This is list of addresses for which your vacation message is active. Leaving this field blank will set up the vacation message for your default account (username@iod.ucsd.edu).
The 'Save Changes' link will save any changes made to the three fields listed above. The 'Enable' and 'Disable' links can be used to turn your vacation message on and off (note that the 'Enable' and 'Disable' links will not appear until you have written and saved a vacation message).
Forwarding
Sieve can automatically forward email from your IOD email account to another account. To set up or remove forwarding, log in to SmartSieve as mentioned above, then click on 'Forwarding' in the top menu bar.
- Forwarding Address: This the address to which your IOD email will be forwarded.
- Keep a copy in Inbox: This will cause the system to retain a copy of any forwarded mail. If you choose this option, you should log on to you IOD account frequently to remove unneeded messages.
The 'Save Changes' link will save any changes made to the two fields listed above. The 'Enable' and 'Disable' links can be used to turn your forwarding on and off. The 'Delete' link will permanently remove the forwarding rule (note that the 'Enable', 'Disable', and 'Delete' links will not appear until you have entered and saved a forwarding address).
