IOD Facilities Statement

Computer Infrastructure:
The Integrative Oceanographic Division (IOD) computational facility is an established community resource, supporting multidisciplinary research in a multi-tier configuration. IOD is a division of Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), a department of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), supporting approximately 50 independent researchers.
The IOD digital infrastructure supports more than 200 computers, distributed throughout SIO. These include Unix, MS Windows, Linux and Mac OS9 and OSX based workstations, laptop and server-class computers. All machines are connected to the UCSD campus network, the commodity Internet, and Internet II, via a fiber optic backbone and a distributed Cisco Switched network.
The central computer support consists of a Network Operation Center (NOC) and server room housing Sun Solaris, RedHat Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OSX servers. These provide email, storage, web, printing, database, remote sensing, directory (DNS, DHCP and LDAP), and computational services to the department.
The IOD computational facility operates within and supports an open source environment. Our work facilitates the interaction of the Division's scientific, engineering, administrative, and information systems groups, along with the organizational and education/outreach efforts of SIO as a whole. The IOD computational facility contributes to the work of its multiple user communities through participatory practices incorporating ongoing feed-back and dedication to the principles of functionality, sustainability and adaptability. At the same time, it draws from and enriches the field of ocean informatics through active engagement with sociotechnical design strategies, focused infrastructural development, and advanced data management.
